Shinzo Abe, the former prime minister of Japan, died after being shot twice on Friday morning during a campaign event in the city of Nara.
He was reportedly shot twice by unidentified attacker while the former Japanese prime minister was delivering a campaign speech. Shinzo Abe had collapsed after bleeding due to the gunshot being fired at him. He was rushed to hospital in an “unconscious” state.
Shinzo Abe had showed “no vital signs” after being taken to hospital, official said earlier.

“Abe was attacked by a man from behind while he was making a stump speech on a street in Nara on Friday. Police seized the man who attacked Abe at around 11.30 am,” according to a report by The Japan Times.
Japanese Police have identified the suspect arrested for shooting former prime minister Shinzo Abe on Friday as Tetsuya Yamagami, a 41-year-old resident of Nara City, according to Japanese media, news agency ANI reported.

PM Modi took to Twitter to express his sadness over the former Japan PM’s death.
“I am shocked and saddened beyond words at the tragic demise of one of my dearest friends, Shinzo Abe. He was a towering global statesman, an outstanding leader, and a remarkable administrator. He dedicated his life to make Japan and the world a better place,” wrote the PM.
“My association with Mr. Abe goes back many years. I had got to know him during my tenure as Gujarat CM and our friendship continued after I became PM. His sharp insights on economy and global affairs always made a deep impression on me,” he added.
“As a mark of our deepest respect for former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, a one day national mourning shall be observed on 9 July 2022,” PM Modi tweeted.
