Dilip Kumar, real name Mohammad Yusuf Khan, passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday July 7, aged 98.
The legendary actor had been suffering from prolonged illness for quite sometime. He was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Mumbai’s Hinduja Hospital on June 30.
“He passed away due to prolonged illness at 7.30 am,” Dr Jalil Parkar, who had been treating the actor, told PTI.
One of the most iconic Bollywood actors he starred in many classics during his time, with Mughal-e-Azam, Devdas, Naya Daur (New Age), Ram Aur Shyam and Madhumati being the best of Indian cinema in that era.
The actor was born Mohammad Yusuf Khan on December 11, 1922, Peshawar city, now in Pakistan. His father was a fruit merchant who took his family to India’s entertainment capital in the 1930s.
The veteran actor is survived by his 76-year-old wife Saira Banu, a former Bollywood actress.
