Turkey-Syria earthquake live news: US urges UN vote on aid access

Rescuers have continued to pull out more survivors from the rubble in Turkey and Syria as the death toll from last week’s earthquakes topped 33,000.

The tremors have killed at least 29,605 people in Turkey as of Monday, and more than 3,500 in Syria. The death toll in Syria has not been updated for two days.

The United Nations says up to 5.3 million people in Syria may be homeless after the earthquakes, while nearly 900,000 people are in urgent need of hot food in Turkey and Syria.

In Syria, earthquake aid from government-held regions into rebel-controlled territory has been held up by approval issues with the Hay’et Tahrir al-Sham armed group, according to the UN.

Martin Griffith, the UN aid chief, has said the world has so far failed people in northwest Syria, saying survivors there “rightly feel abandoned”.

The United States has urged all parties in Syria to allow earthquake aid to get to those in need and called on the UN Security Council to authorise the delivery of supplies to rebel-held territory through more border crossings from Turkey.
