The Defence Ministry’s data from 2020 has revealed that J&K had the fourth highest army recruitment in India during 2017-2019 year which is more than some states.

As per the reports the erstwhile state of J&K had witnessed 185 army recruitments per 10 lakh population from 2017-2019. The former state was led by Himachal Pradesh where the overall recruitment per 10 lakh population during the three years was recorded at 402, Uttarakhand had recorded 271 per million population and Sikkim where the footfall of such recruitments was recorded at 185 per million.

Notably, as per the figures given by Ministry of Defence and sorted out by India In Pixels(IIP)—an independent organisation that sorts National data in figures—the highest recruitments in India were witnessed in conflict ridden regions including J&K and north east states—Sikkim(185), Arunachal Pradesh(127), Manipur(104) and Mizoram(139).

As per the data, the erstwhile state is preceded by the state’s of Punjab where the recruitment per 10 lakh population was recorded at 174 and Haryana where the same rate was recorded at 122 per million population.

The Defence Ministry’s data has also revealed that since 2016 (till 2019), there had been a positive increment in the overall recruitments for Indian Army in the erstwhile state.

During 2016-17, a total of 1954 people from J&K were recruited in the army and in 2017-18, the number had slightly slipped to 1817. But, as per the data, the recruitments in J&K had seen a hefty boost during 2018-19 year when the total recruitments in the region had reached to over 3500. “3672 people were recruited from J&K during 2018-2019.” the data reads.

It is pertinent to mention here that the state’s/UTs where the idea of Nationalism had seen a drastic increase since 2014 have been placed in the category of “parts of India” that have recorded the lowest recruitments.

As per the data, Uttar Pradesh had recorded only 28 recruitments per one million population during 2017-19, Madhya Pradesh has recorded 25 recruitments in the same category and Chhattisgarh has recorded 21. Gujarat had recorded only 16 recruitments in the same category during 2017-19 year.

Notably, as per the IIP sorted data, the lowest recruitments in India during 2017-19 were recorded in Goa(02), Tripura(69) and Meghalaya(89).
