A 53-year-old Muslim woman named Roshni was shot dead on May 14 in Siddhartha Nagar district as she tried to resist the detention of her son.

The police said a team of officers had gone to Kodra Grant village on Saturday on a complaint of cow slaughter and caught Roshni’s son Ubaid-ur-Rehman, following which the family and their neighbours attacked the police team.

While the family of the woman Roshni alleged that she was shot dead by the police after she refused to hand over her son to the police during the raid, police said she was shot by a local man who was trying to disperse a crowd which had gathered at the spot to thwart the police operation.

Mohammed Farooq, son of Roshni, said that around 15-20 police officials barged into their house during night and asked for his brother Abdul Rehman without giving concrete reasons. He (Abdul) had arrived from Mumbai on May 09 to attend his sister scheduled to take place on May 22.

When Abdul came down, the police caught him and tried to take him away.

“Seeing this my mother who was right there ran after them. She held his (Abdul’s) hand and questioned them (the police) as to where they were taking her son. She kept telling the police to let go of him,” Farooq was quoted as saying.

The police warned Roshni that if she does not let her son go, they will shoot her. “Soon after the gunshot, angry residents came out of teir houses and started protesting. The police that came with a special operation group took Abdul away in a hurry,” the report added.

Roshni sustained bullet injuries and died on the spot.

“There was a bullet injury mark as the bullet passed through her body. I am yet to go through the post-mortem report,” said Siddharth Nagar circle officer Pradeep Kumar Yadav. An FIR has been lodged on a complaint by Ubaid-ur-Rehman’s brother Abdul Rehman, he added.
