“15-Year-Old Kargil Girl Samina Khatoon Inspires a New Generation of Women Ice-Hockey Players in Ladakh”
Ladakh, Jan 28: A pair of unused skiing boots became a life-changing catalyst for 15-year-old Samina Khatoon, a trailblazer from the small village of Trespone in Kargil. Breaking barriers in a region where ice hockey is dominated by men, Samina emerged as a beacon of hope for aspiring women athletes.
The journey wasn’t easy. Initially, Samina faced strong opposition from her mother when she decided to try on the boots, a gift originally intended for her brother, who showed no interest in skiing. Despite the challenges, her passion and determination paved the way for her success.
Samina’s moment of glory came on Monday during the Khelo India Winter Games 2025 in Leh. As the youngest member of the Ladakh ice hockey team, she scored a crucial goal in the gold medal match, leading her team to a 4-0 victory against arch-rivals ITBP.
Her proud parents, Mohammad Younus and Fatima Bano, now celebrate their daughter’s remarkable achievements, as she continues to inspire a new wave of women athletes in Ladakh.
