Jailed Member of Parliament Er. Rashid’s father has passed away after a prolonged illness in Delhi.

The Delhi High Court on Monday granted interim bail to Baramulla Member of Parliament Engineer Rashid to enable him to attend the last rites of his father, Haji Khazir Mohammad Sheikh.

The father of jailed Baramulla MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid, died at a hospital in Delhi on Monday (May 18, 2026). He was 85.

Family sources told news agency JKNS, that Haji Khazir Mohammad Sheikh passed away on Monday morning after prolonged illness. His demise has been widely condoled across Jammu and Kashmir.

Following the death, appeals were made on humanitarian grounds seeking permission for the jailed MP to participate in the last rites and funeral prayers of his father.

“Haji Khazir Mohammad Sheikh, father of Member of Parliament, Baramulla, Engineer Rashid, is no more,” Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi said in Srinagar.

Mr. Nabi appealed to the Government of India and the authorities concerned to immediately facilitate the release of the Baramulla MP so that he can participate in the last rites of his father.

Er Rashid, presently lodged in Tihar Jail in connection with a terror-funding case being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), was subsequently granted interim bail by the Delhi High Court to attend the funeral and related rituals. (JKNS)

Rashid was earlier granted interim bail by the Delhi High Court on April 30, 2026, to meet his father who was critically ill in a Srinagar hospital. He met his father at the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital (SMHS).

The interim bail had been granted after the party had moved for it last month, and ruling National Conference (NC) president Dr. Farooq Abdullah also demanded his release.
