A civilian was shot dead by unidentified civilians on Wednesday in Kulgam district of South Kashmir, officials said.

Around 7:30 pm Wednesday, unknown militants opened fire upon Satish Kumar Singh, a Rajput, in Pumbai village of the district leaving him critically injured, officials said.

A driver by profession, Singh was rushed to a local hospital where doctors referred him to a facility in Srinagar in view of his critical condition.

“He was brought dead to SKIMS,” a senior doctor at the Valley’s tertiary care hospital here said.

The man had gunshot injury to the head, the doctor said. “He was brought to hospital in unconscious state. He had no central pulse or peripheral pulses,” the doctor added.

“#KulgamTerrorIncidentUpdate: Civilian Satesh Kumar Singh, a resident of Kulgam, #succumbed to his injuries at hospital. #Terrorists involved in this #gruesome terror crime will be neutralised soon. Search to track the involved #terrorists in progress,” police posted on its official Twitter handle.

Kulgam and Shopian districts have small pockets with Rajput families who have never migrated out of Jammu and Kashmir. They are mainly into the apple business.

Pertinently, the attack on Singh comes over a week after three people, including two Bihar residents were injured in twin attacks by suspected militants in the twin districts of Pulwama and Shopian on April 4.

Joko Chowdary and Patlashwar Kumar, both residents of Bihar were shot at and injured in Lajoora area of Pulwama.

Hours later, 35-year-old Sonu Kumar, son of Jankee Nath was fired upon by militants in his native Chotigam village of Shopian district.

A day earlier, two Punjab residents were injured by unknown militants in the south Kashmir district on April 3. (With agency inputs)
