Locals in Shopian town staged a protest after Friday prayers from Jamia Masjid in the South Kashmir district in support of girl students fighting the Hijab ban in Karnataka.

Shouting slogans and carrying placards, scores of locals took out a march from Jamia Masjid of Shopian in a show of solidarity with the girl students at the centre of the Hijab row.

“Hijab is a personal choice and nobody has a right to dictate to Muslim girls or anyone on what to wear and what not,” a protestor said.

The ongoing Hijab row in Karnataka has seen hijab clad students being barred from examinations in colleges following which protests were held.

Soon after fringe elements took over and the issue became about hijab vs saffron.
