Srinagar has made the Top 50 cleanest cities list in India but fell 7 points from its previous ranking showcasing a decrease in the quality of sanitation in the region.

Srinagar had achieved the 36th position in 2020, but slipped to 42nd position this year.

In the 10 top-ranked cleanest cities having a population of more than one million, Indore was declared cleanest city of India followed by Surat, Vijaywada, Navi Mumbai, New Delhi, Ambikapur, Tirupati, Pune, Noida and Ujjain.

As per reports Srinagar city bagged 12th position in Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge 2021 and in Swachh Survekshan Srinagar bagged 42nd position.

The cities are usually rated using a star system and this year, 342 cities, an increase from 56 in 2018, would be given certificates under some star rating. This includes nine five-star cities, 166 three-star cities, 167 one-star cities.

As many as 342 cities were conferred with some star rating in this year’s annual cleanliness survey, with a total of 4,320 cities taking part in it.

The Union ministry of housing and urban affairs (MOHUA) that conducted the ‘Swachh Survekshan 2021’ awards with the Quality Council of India (QCI) under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) said in a statement earlier that the sixth edition of the event has become the “world’s largest urban cleanliness survey.”
