Twitter has taken a dig at Facebook’s decision to change its name to META, mocking the social media giant’s rebranding.

“The only #META we acknowledge is this…”, the Twitter Safety handle posted along with a link to a report on the company’s META team that it has hired to build what it calls “ethical AI”.

The group includes some of the most well-known and notorious critics of tech.

Twitter’s META stands for “Machine Learning, Ethics, Transparency and Accountability”, and the team is led by Rumman Chowdhury.

A separate post by Twitter after Zuckerberg’s announcement is also going viral on the platform, though it doesn’t mention Facebook or Meta.

Earlier, at his company’s Connect event Thursday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that its new name will be Meta, as he said they are hoping to be seen as a metaverse company over time.

Zuckerberg said the name Facebook is still closely linked to its one product and doesn’t encompass everything they do now.

“We are a company that builds technology to connect. Together, we can finally put people at the center of our technology. And together, we can unlock a massively bigger creator economy.”

Facebook has invested heavily in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) and intends to connect its nearly three billion users through several devices and apps. The company announced plans to create 10,000 jobs in the European Union over the next five years to help build the metaverse.
