Abdul Qayoom Bhat popularly known as ‘Qayoom Badshah’ is a Kashmiri comedy actor from Baramulla who is widely loved for his hysterical skits and making people roll over laughing with his antics.
He has performed for 40 years doing various roles for state and national television. Some of his famous dramas include ‘Fashion Kur( Fashion girl), ‘Chouk Maddur'( bitter and sweet) etc, Qayoom Bhat has made a place in the hearts of Kashmiri people with his funny skits long before the age of social media.
Being of a small stature when it comes to his physical height has proved to be a blessing in disguise with him bringing another element of comedy to his acts.
He has tickled the funny bone of Kashmiris for ages and has evolved his character and sense of humour with time.
Earlier. the comedy dramas he acted in were distributed on CD’s throughout Kashmir and soon Abdul Qayoom Bhat became a household name with people adoringly calling him ‘Sheeda’ a character he played in one of his plays, while others gave him the nickname ‘Badshah’ which stuck.
Even in the age of social media, Qayoom Badshah and his comedy is held as one of the standard bearers of comic acting in Kashmir.
Still Qayoom says that today it is easy for people to propagate their talents to the outside world, while an artist like him has been left behind as people consume more and more content on a daily basis.
He believes that people should give artists their due as he along with others have helped shape drama industry of Kashmir.
He says it’s easy to go for fame and money but his real purpose has always been to entertain and make people laugh in a place like Kashmir.
Qayoom says whatever status he has achieved has been due to the love and affection people have shown him over the years and he hopes to return the favour to his fans one day.
The comedy actor also has aspirations to work in Bollywood as he thinks he can showcase his talents at the highest level and bring the B-Town to Kashmir to explore more of this place’s talents.
Qayoom Badshah is a king in his own right, rightly labelled as Comedy King of Kashmir by his fans as he continues to make us laugh and create a legacy for comedy in Kashmir.
