She was pushed by her teachers from Kashmir Harvard School who sensed her capabilities and wanted her to give it everything to secure the top position in the examination.
After a largely unyielding 11th Class session, Tabinda knew this was the year where she could set a pathway for her career. Hence not only securing first position but to completely gain full knowledge to compete at all India level was the goal of the young student.
Tabinda began preparation from the onset, making notes of lessons in the school and maintaining a daily routine of self study and practice.
This thorough daily practice lessened her burden while keeping her motivated towards her goal. She says during her exams she used to study and practice for five hours while not staying up for late night studies to keep her mind fresh.
She says she didn’t followed a fixed time for studying rather giving it few hours throughout the day helped her prepare better.
One of the biggest challenges for Tabinda was the pandemic gripping valley once again, but that didn’t deter her. Despite attending school only a few times, she kept working towards the task in her mind and with the assistance of her teachers she was able to achieve her success.
Despite there being a 30 per cent relaxation in syllabus, Tabinda wanted to go all out in her preparation and leave no stone unturned. For her Class 12th exam was just a milestone, with pursuing a career further in commerce in Chartered Accountancy her main aim.
Such exams require complete knowledge of the subject and therefore no syllabus reduction was going to help her short term.
With this in mind Tabinda prepared thoroughly and went 100% prepared in her exams, realizing this was one of the stepping stones towards her further success.
She credits her success to her parents who she says always backed her and put no pressure on her to to secure any sort of position or percentage. Her father, also a Chartered Accountant himself made life easy for her in more than one way, asking her to not worry about marks, positions or percentage.
Her father was also an inspiration for her take up commerce. Other than that Tabinda is immensely grateful to the Kashmir Harvard faculty who were the first to realize her potential and made her work towards securing first position in her stream.
Tabinda Jan says there is no short cut to success and nothing is an overnight achievement. One has to prepare from the beginning and passionately pursue whatever targets they have set for themselves.
The commerce topper also comes up with a sound advice for the powers that be in education saying that there should be a uniform syllabus throughout the valley from grade one, so that students can compete at equal footing from any part of the region.
Tabinda believes this is essential to give a real sense of competition so that less privileged students can have a fair shot at competing with others, which will help improve the overall state of education in Kashmir.
