2 Civilians Fired Upon By Army After Altercation Over Clicking Photos In Handwara.

Two civilians sustained bullet injuries after army opened fire upon civilians Handwara area of Kupwara district.

“We have received two youth in their twenties with firearm injuries. They are being treated at Sub-district hospital Handwara and their condition is stable,” the Medical Superintendent of Handwara hospital said.

Dr. Nisar Ahmed Wani identified the two as Mujeeeb u Rehman, a resident of Handwara aged 22, and Abdul Ahad Mir, a resident of Rajwar, aged 24. He said the duo has received injuries in their left thigh.

Eyewitnesses told GNS that while the people were entering inside Masjid at Jamia Jadeed Main Chowk Handwara, army soldiers were making their video and clicking photographs to which locals objected.

This initial argument led to a heated exchange of words and during this verbal brawl, suddenly the forces opened fire on the people, resulting in two injuries, according to locals

A top police officer told GNS that soldiers of 21 RR had gone to Jamia Masjid Handwara for video making of Namaz (prayers). “Some people objected and then there was altercation between army and civilians,” the officer said, adding, “During altercation there has been accidental fire and two persons received injury in leg. Both are stable.”

The injured identified as Abdul Ahad Mir from Rajwar and Mujeeb Ahmad Sofi from Handwara, have been hospitalized. (GNS)
