Dinesh Saklani, the Director of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), recently clarified that there will be no changes to the Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. His statement aimed to address concerns and confusion surrounding the future of board exams, emphasizing that the policy explicitly confirms that these exams will continue as they have been. He reassured students, parents, and educators, stating, “There’s no need for confusion about the board exams, as it is explicitly stated in the policy.”

This clarification should put to rest any doubts regarding the structure of the upcoming board exams, with the NEP focusing on enhancing the overall education system, but not altering the board exam process for these grades.

Focus on Academic Transition

The NEP emphasizes a smooth academic transition for students, particularly in Class 5 and Class 8, through examinations designed to prepare them for secondary education. Students who underperform in these exams will have a second chance, fostering a flexible and student-centric approach to learning.

5+3+3+4 Education Structure

Saklani also explained the 5+3+3+4 framework introduced under NEP:

•Foundational Stage (5 years): Includes three years of preschool and Grades 1 and 2.

•Preparatory Stage (3 years): Grades 3 to 5, focusing on foundational literacy and numeracy.

•Middle Stage (3 years): Grades 6 to 8, emphasizing experiential learning.

•Secondary Stage (4 years): Split into two phases, Grades 9 and 10 in the first phase, and Grades 11 and 12 in the second.

Workshop on NEP Implementation

A three-day National Workshop on NEP 2020 implementation was held in Odisha, where the Union Education Minister highlighted the rollout of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF). The NCF is expected to modernize India’s education system by aligning it with global standards while ensuring inclusivity and flexibility.

The NEP aims to make India’s education system more dynamic, inclusive, and student-focused, ensuring that board exams remain a reliable evaluation method while introducing reforms to support every student’s growth.
