J&K has witnessed a shocking rise in crimes against women the National Crime Records Bureau’s latest report has revealed.
As per the data available in NCRB’s “Crime in India 2020” report, J&K recorded a shocking 243 rape cases involving 247 victims.
The statistics also reveal in 2020, there were nine cases of dowry deaths, 349 cases of cruelty against women by their husbands or relatives.
The report indicates that violence against women has seen a sharp rise amid the “conservative Muslim society in Kashmir” in recent years.
Murders, Kidnapping and Rape
“In 2020,” the report says, “in J&K there were 487 cases of attempt to murder. There were also 35 cases of abetment of suicide and 24 cases of abetment of suicide of women in 2020.”
More than 183 people were murdered in 2020. Likewise 581 cases of attempt to murder involving 677 victims were registered last year. Around 581 cases of death caused by negligence were booked in 2020.
In 2020, the report suggests there were nine cases of dowry deaths, 243 rape cases with 247 victims including three girls, 349 cases of cruelty against women by their husbands or relatives, 1,639 cases of assault on women and 1,744 cases of assault on women with intention to outrage their modesty.
Divulging more details, the data shows an approximate 29% increase in crimes against children with 606 incidents in 2020 in comparison to 473 and 470 cases in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
The report also reveals that the augmenting suicide cases in J&K have played a significant part in the increased crime statistics with approximately 472 incidences of attempt to commit suicide in 2020.
“About 30 cases of stalking were registered in 2020 that included 15 cases of sexual harassment,” the report said. “The murder cases saw an increase of 25% with 149 cases in 2020 as against 119 in 2019.”
