Kashmir Digits: Top 10 Emerging Artists of Kashmir Year 2021.

Kashmir has seen a spurt of young artists emerging with talents of all kind. Not only Kashmiri artists have brought classic art forms back to life, some of them have taken up modern art forms and carved their own place

Paper art, calligraphy, sketch art and football trick shots just to name a few, our valley is filled with artists from various fields, who have amazed and impressed with their work.

Kashmir Digits now presents ten emerging artists who have made a name for themselves in the year 2021.

NOTE: This list is in no particular order of ranking and is a recognition of their work, with top ten names featuring for their art.

1) Humaira Thakur:

Humaira Thakur is a young calligrapher from Kashmir, calligraphy started as something of a hobby for this 21 year old girl, but after posting her work on social media, she garnered much appreciation and encouragement from her family and friends.

Since then Humaira has done calligraphy on a regular basis. Her work is adorable and done with a meticulous approach. She has steadily grown to be one of the valley’s talented calligrapher this year and has won honours for her artwork.

2) Umar Ghazi

Poetry is an emotion and very few people can understand, comprise and deliver it in such a way that it touches the heart, Umer Ghazi Mir is one such young poet from Pulwama, Kashmir.

His accomplishments are growing day by day and he recently was selected to be a part of All India Mushaira held in Jammu in 2021.

Out of over 1100 poets that applied to be in the event only 5 were selected from Kashmir and Umer being one of them makes this feat all the more impressive.

3) Sahil Imityaz Mir.

Sahil Imityaz Mir, is a Kashmir artist specializing in sculptures, art installations and paintings.

From creating astonishing portraits to sculptors and making shadow art, Sahil brings art to life at a different level.

He has also completed a full human sculpture, the sheer scale of which is mesmerizing.

Sahil’s work is absolutely jaw dropping and deserves its spot on the list.

4) Waris Wani

Waris Wani from Tral, is Kashmir’s new age comedian.

His videos on social media, particularly Instagram have made people laugh out loud. In a short span of time, Waris has gained immense popularity with his comedy skits which often give out a message to the society.

Making people laugh especially in a place like Kashmir is a challenge in itself and Waris does this quite perfectly.

Whether it be day to day happenings or issues in society, his take on such matters is both funny and thought provoking.

5) Faizan Fayaz

Faizan Fayaz is a beat boxer from Bagh- e- Mehtab, Srinagar. He has performed in numerous events in front of large crowds. He was also one of the lead beat boxers of KBX, a beatboxing community in Kashmir.

For those of you who may not be aware of beat boxing, it is a form of vocal percussion primarily involving the art of mimicking drum machines, using one’s mouth, lips, tongue, and voice.

Faizan also sees beatboxing as a long term career in the music making genre as musicians, singers require sounds and that makes it the work of a duo. One for singing and the other for producing sounds.

6) Maheen Shabir

Maheen Shabir is a 23 year old Paper crafting artist from Srinagar, Kashmir. Like her name her work is delicate and beautifully crafted. In a short span of time this girl has made quite a name for herself despite having a speech and hearing impairment.

After casually making a gift card for one of her friends, which wowed and impressed all those who saw the intricate work she had done, Maheen gained confidence to pursue paper art further.

After a suggestion Maheen opened a social media account to display her works and her craft was now reaching a broader audience.

The talented girl from Gojwara began receiving orders to create more such custom made works. She has been flooded with praise and appreciation from all over the valley.

7) Shah Huzaib

Shah Huzaib is 19 year old football trick shot artist from Charar Shareef, Budgam, in Kashmir, whose peculiar trick shot videos have taken the internet by storm.

Huzaib has featured on many media outlets both locally and nationally following his exploits, while Indian international footballer Baichung Bhutia shared his video and also showed appreciation for this young trickster.

 He will also be seen in India’s Got Talent, India’s biggest talent show soon.

8) Murtaz Bhat

Murtaz Bhat is a 23 year old sketch artist from Sonwar, Srinagar who draws hyper realistic sketches with a resounding detail that will capture your imagination straightaway.

Murtaz’s art is so immersive that once you cast your eyes on it, you can’t turn away. Like a pure artist this soft spoken person lets his work do the talking.

His illustrations are a work of brilliance and sketch art at its finest.

9) Soliha Shabir

Soliha Shabir is a 23 year old author from Srinagar Kashmir, who received widespread acclaim for reviving legendary Habba Khatoon’s poetry in her book titled ‘Zoon’- The Heart of Habba Khatoon.

Already an author of two books her latest book ‘Zoon’- The Heart of Habba Khatoon was launched in December 2020. It is a compilation of poems centered around the pain of Habba Khatoon.

According to the author herself the aim of this book is to make people intrigued about the life of Habba Khatoon, her struggles and pain.

At a young age Soliha has shown her deep understanding of conflicting human emotions and penned them down in a beautiful manner. She is definitely going to be one Kashmir’s known authors in the coming years.

10) Maliq Abid

Maliq Abid is a photographer from Pampore Kashmir, who loves to capture the beauty of the valley in all its scenic glory, from colorful weddings to crowded streets to secluded destinations, Abid has showcased Kashmir’s rich culture in his photography skills in an elegant manner.

For Abid as like for any artist there is an inspiration for his work. For him its Kashmir itself, the photographer cites our food, to clothing and the obvious scenic beauty, Kashmir is a haven for any one willing to become a photographer.

His work is a must-see as he captures Kashmir’s iconic beauty while adding his own flavour to his photographs which make for some amazing clicks.

Maliq Abid’s photography is being appreciated all over Kashmir and we hope he will soon bring laurels to the valley through his work.

There are other artists that deserve a mention of their own and we will put them in the bonus section. Their work is also commendable and we recommend checking them out as well.

1) Faheem Fatima

Faheem Fatima, is a young artist from Hawal, Srinagar who does acrylic painting. Her work is bewildering and her passion for it knows no bounds.

She picked up the brush at an early age and since has filled numerous canvasses with colour. Her exquisite style and the ease with which she carries out her work is mesmerizing. When she paints, its truly like seeing a master at her work.

2) Mudasir Rehman Dar

Mudasir Rehman Dar from South Kashmir’s Kulgam district has managed to secure a mention in the Asian and Indian Book of Records by creating the smallest painting of the Holy Kabba on a ring and a leaf, which is a first in Jammu and Kashmir.

He creates abstract paintings and portraits on various themes, focusing on the menace of drug abuse, child labour and other social evils that exist in society.

3) Irtiqa Fayaz Khan

Irtiqa Fayaz Khan, from Kashmir, at the age of 13 years became the youngest author to compile an anthology under ‘India Book of Records’.

Her book titled ‘The Merged Miracles of Pen’ included works of 20 authors. The book came out in 2021 and has seen many copies sold with great success.
