Mehbooba Mufti, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief on Wednesday warned the BJP government that if it continues its hardline policies, the situation in India could get worse than Sri Lanka.

She expressed anguish over the ongoing situation in India and said that the BJP-led Government is using laws to silence down voices of dissent across India.

Speaking to the press, the PDP chairperson said that the Sri Lankan economic and political crisis should serve as a wake-up call for the Indian Government.

She stated that India was being whipped into a communal frenzy and imagined fears since 2014.

“I hope they will learn a lesson from what is going on in Sri Lanka and stop going the way they are going. The way they (BJP) are promoting communalism, and hypernationalism is dangerous and it needs to be stopped immediately or the conditions in India will get worse than in Sri Lanka,” Mehbooba Mufti said.

Earlier the former CM took to Twitter and wrote, “What happened in Sri Lanka should serve as a wake-up call. Since 2014, India is being whipped into a communal frenzy & imagined fears. It is treading the same path of hyper-nationalism & religious majoritarianism. All at the cost of disrupting social cohesion & economic security.”
