Comic book and fans of superhero movies will soon get to witness another exciting installment in the ever expanding superhero digital content in form of the live action series”Ms. Marvel”.
Ms. Marvel will be part of the large ensemble of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is the first Muslim superhero in the popular franchise.
The show will be introducing Marvel’s first South Asian superhero as well as a first from the Muslim community.
The lead character of Ms. Marvel aka Kamala Khan will be portrayed by Iman Vellani.
Vellani will play the 16-year-old Kamala Khan character a Pakistani-American teenager.
What makes the casting choice excellent is that Iman Vellani is herself a Pakistani-Canadian actress.
Born in Karachi, Pakistan to Muslim parents, Vellani moved to Canada when she was a year old.
Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel first appeared in the comics in 2013. She is one of the newer Marvel characters and part of a superhero generation led by women and ethnically diverse characters (see also She-Hulk, Elektra and an X-Men series focused on women).
A Pakistani-American growing up in Jersey City she is Muslim – like her creators G Willow Wilson, a comics writer who converted to Islam as an adult, and Sana Amanat, Marvel’s director of character development – and her religion and culture is embraced.
A young girl with a big imagination who loves gaming and writing fanfiction about her super-idols, but feels like a “weirdo” – until she develops super powers like the heroes she idolises.
Kamala Khan’s conflicts are not just with supervillains, but with her spirituality, family duties and traditions.
“This is not evangelism,” Wilson told the New York Times. “It was really important for me to portray Kamala as someone who is struggling with her faith.”
Khan’s character and story is not just about being Muslim. It is much more about her adventures as a teenager with superpowers.
She doesn’t know how to be cool or act around people or certain situations.
She argues with her parents. She stresses out about managing her schoolwork while saving the planet.
And she is obsessed with Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel, eventually naming herself Ms Marvel when she discovers the superpowers.

Apart from that Indian actors like Mohan Kapur, Zenobia Shroff and Saagar Shaikh also play an important part in the show.
Main stream actors like Bollywood star Farhan Akhtar and Pakistan actor Fawad Khan will also be making their MCU debut through the show.
