The News Broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority (NBDSA) has directed news channels including Aaj Tak, Zee News, News18 to take down certain programs that “vilify” Muslims.

In a detailed order, the self regulatory body directed News18 to take down a show on “Thook jihad”. “The hosted by Aman Chopra, amounted to targeting of a particular community”, the order said.

According to Muslim Mirror, the broadcast regulator has also directed Zee News to remove a program on Muslim population. It said that the channel failed to justify the title of the show, which read, “Qudrat bahana hai, Muslim aabaadi badhana hai?”

The regulatory body objected to the “sensationalisation of some taglines and tickers” by India TV, Aaj Tak, Zee News and Zee Hindustan.

The authority has directed India TV, Aaj Tak, Zee News and Zee Hindustan to take down objectionable videos on Umar Khalid. The channels were accused of running a “media trial” against Khalid.

The body questioned the media for treating the police report as “gospel truth”.

“The Police report is not gospel truth, as portrayed by the channels. The moment the line is crossed and the message is conveyed that Umar Khalid has been proved guilty or there is sufficient evidence against him to prove him guilty, it would become a media trial which is not permissible in law.”

It issued the order based on a complaint filed by a person called Indrajeet Ghorpade. Most of the programmes mentioned by Ghorpade pertained to panel discussions on news channels over the supplementary charge sheet against Khalid in November 2020.
