Sameen Khan popularly known as RJ Sameen has been one of Kashmir’s most influential radio voices for a long time. He is currently a radio jockey with RED FM and is known for his humorous take on social issues.
Sameen is among the most popular voices of radio in Kashmir and among a select few who hold gravitas in the now saturated field of RJ. His open letters on his morning show addressing issues like corruption, lack of professionalism, traffic congestion, electricity woes have been a massive hit among listeners.
For Sameen becoming a radio jockey was not a straight path. While doing B.Tech from a college in Punjab, Sameen got an opportunity to audition during a RJ Hunt for a local radio station. The young Kashmiri was able to excel and even managed to get selected.
However, since it was a local radio station, speaking Punjabi was mandatory, which meant Sameen had to leave this opportunity. He was encouraged by the recruiters to pursue this career and this was a seed for him to work in radio.
After completing his B. Tech he returned to Kashmir. While here, RED FM organized a massive RJ Hunt, where Sameen stamped his ticket to be a radio jockey. Being selected from over 900 participants was an achievement in itself and he was now part one of Kashmir’s growing radio stations.
RJ Sameen hosts a morning show where he gives a humorous take on various social issues or any general topic like professionalism, electricity. He writes open letters- speaking to these topics directly, addressing these issues as if writing to a person. These open letters have proven to be a real popular segment for the listeners of radio.
Talking about making an impact and being the voice of reason for people Sameen says radio has played a key part in bringing everyday issues of people to whom they may concern, while also creating awareness among the masses.
As a morning radio jockey, Sameen says he has a lot of responsibility to set people in the right mood and give correct information on various issues. Since radio is still one of the authentic sources of information, he has to give out information, awareness about various topics after a thought out process while also keeping a hint of entertainment along the way.
The responsibility and importance of radio is even more in these challenging times, with people ever so reliant on it for news that concerns them.
One of the most commendable jobs the RJ did was during the time of pandemic when he bridged the gap of understanding between leading doctors of the valley to administration to a common Kashmiri, as everyone was brought on air to share their thoughts. This helped clear a lot information and assure people of what was been done for them at such a hard time.
Sameen Khan is one of the few RJ’s of the valley who has kept his stature right from the beginning and when he talks people listen, which underline the respect and acknowledgment he holds as one of Kashmir’s prominent voices on radio.
He also says that one should do justice to the work they are doing and pursue one’s goals without deterring from their path.
Sameen continues to carry on his work with dedication and aiming to bring some comfort to the life of people with the help of radio and beyond.
