WhatsApp, the world’s leading messaging platform owned by Meta, is reportedly testing a groundbreaking privacy feature that will allow users to connect using unique usernames instead of phone numbers. The move is being hailed as one of the app’s most significant updates in years, aiming to strengthen user privacy and control.

According to leaked beta screenshots shared by app-tracking sources, a new “Username” field has been spotted within WhatsApp’s settings interface. This feature will enable users to create a personalized identifier, allowing others to find or message them without revealing their phone number.

Early reports also suggest the introduction of enhanced privacy controls, letting users choose who can see their phone number in individual chats and group conversations. This could provide an added layer of security—especially for users who frequently join large groups or communicate with strangers for business or community purposes.

While WhatsApp has not officially confirmed a launch date, insiders hint that the feature is still under development and may roll out initially to beta testers before a global release.

If implemented, this update would align WhatsApp with platforms like Telegram and Instagram, which already use username-based systems to simplify user discovery and improve privacy.

With over 2 billion users worldwide, WhatsApp’s shift from phone numbers to usernames represents a major step toward giving users greater anonymity and control over their digital identity.
