Mumbai Police has registered an FIR against Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh for “hurting sentiments of women” after the pictures from his nude photoshoot went viral on social media.
Ranveer Singh has been booked under sections 509, 292, and 294 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 67 A of the IT Act. The FIR against him was lodged at Chembur police station on Tuesday.
The complaint applications were submitted separately at the Chembur police station by an office-bearer of a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), also based in the east Mumbai suburb, and a woman lawyer.
The NGO office-bearer stated the actor has hurt the sentiments of women in general and insulted their modesty through his photographs. The application filed by the lawyer also demanded a case against the ‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’ star on the charge of intent to outrage the modesty of women.

Ranveer Singh was photographed in the nude by PAPER magazine. In the pictures, the actor has stripped down to nothing, as he poses on a Turkish rug. His photoshoot was inspired by Burt Reynolds, who did a similar nude shoot for Cosmopolitan magazine.

While many have showered plaudits on Singh for his bold photoshoot, it has also landed him in hot water with certain sections of social media. After receiving support and being trolled in equal measure, he is now in a legal predicament with the lodging of the FIR against him.
After the police complaint, a legal notice was sent to Ranveer Singh for posing nude by a resident of Nalasopara East.
The complaint refers to an FIR registered against Singh during an AIB programme in 2015 and states “It seems that you are habitual to promote obscenity for gaining cheap publicity.”
The notice adds, “When the entire world knows the country for its culture and tradition, then putting such content on social media will lower the esteem of our country,” and that “Children’s attitudes and behaviours about nudity/sex are influenced by role models from social media/TV who are similar in ethnicity and gender.”
According to the notice “exposure to such sexual media content from celebrities like you can affect children’s attitude (towards sexual behaviour and appropriate body image) and increase sexual risk taking in children.” The Nalasopara resident apparently spoke to his friends and relatives about the photographs and found out that “they were also offended after viewing these pictures.”
